How could I remove spyware in my computer?

a website asked me to download the newest activeX. i was curious what that ws so I just clicked okay... but upon realizing that it might cause harm to my comp, i immediately cancelled the download. soon afterwards, my avast antivirus discovered that there were viruses in my computer already.

oh yeah. . . my homepage was suddenly set to http://safehomesite.com which keeps on asking me to dload an anti-spyware. even if i try to set it to a different homepage, it would just keep on setting itself to that same safehomesite page. at times, a pop-up would appear... some sort of anti-spyware thing. also, my internet connection suddenly slowed down.
