New Junk Mail Update for MS Outlook 2003 error: "The update cannot be applied." Now what?

I am stuck in a perpetual "auto-download, prompt to install, install, fail on install" loop for KB931764. I want to maintain the auto-download option, so unless/until this update is applied, I'll continue to get this prompt. I've tried disabling the antivirus program (mcafee.)

There is no info at MS re: this error. Not surprising - the update just came out. There was also distributed an update to the MS Windows Validation component, which *did* install just fine.

I'm willing to try anything to get the update applied.

All software is licensed, uptodate, blah, blah.

Well, what a mess! I just tried this, as I also have Outlook 2003, and I got "Software Validation Error." I know my XP and Office are valid, I'm looking at the key codes. Microsoft screwed up again. It isn't your antivirus or your firewall, that didn't enter into my situation. I went through all the steps and clicked on Download. Bang, back came the "invalid" error.

When your automatic downloads comes up again, you can remove this particular download until this gets fixed. I'll try to find a place to complain to Microsoft about it. If I find that, I'll try to find you again!

Sound like you've got a corrupt download file try this open the control panel double click folder options on the view tab enable "show hidden files and folders" click apply

close the control panel open my computer double click the C drive and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ (it might help if you copy this and type it in to the address bar)

now look for the update that keeps failing drag the complete folder with the update name out on to the desktop now try to update again it should work this time

warning Do NOT delete "$hf_mig$"
