what is the best free antivirus and spyware removal tool that i can download from the internet. i have a virus on my pc i have got most of it off but i know there are still some traces. please help i dont want to reinstall windows. tried hijack this and adware no help the programs wont load.

Your system is infected, so I suggest that you use the "McAfee Stinger" first. I consider it the heavy-duty virus scanner; it is designed to get the really nasty viruses and repair any damage done to your system. The Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses - the worst ones. The following link is the "McAfee Threat Center". Make sure you read this page before you download the Stinger, especially the "How to Use Stinger" section and instruction 2) if your OS is Windows ME or XP (you will have to disable System Restore before doing the scan %26 then turn it back on). Then go to the "Current Stinger Download" section and download the first one - the "Stinger v3.8.0 - Updated September 10, 2007". This is the only one you need, do not bother with the rest - you really have to know what you are doing. If you have anything serious on your system, you will be very glad you did this scan:
